Shiori HORIE

Artist. Born in 1992 in France, raised in Tokyo. In high school, after discovering she was allergic to organic solvents, she decided to pursue Japanese painting, one of the only mediums that relies on hypoallergenic natural pigments. Today, her work is rendered using only washi paper, mineral-based paints, and nikawa glue.

Since graduating in 2014 from the Japanese Painting Course in the Department of Painting at the Tama Art University Faculty of Art and Design, she has been an active working artist, holding solo exhibitions at venues such as Art Fair Tokyo 2015. Also in 2015, she received a Gotoh Memorial Cultural Award, which allowed her to spend the subsequent year studying in Paris.

Her body of work includes cover art for numerous magazines and books, most notably the Japanese and Taiwanese editions of Yoko Tawada's The Emissary, which won the National Book Award in 2018, as well as cover art for a five-volume anthology of Japanese translations of Jules Verne's sequence of novels Voyages Extraordinaires, some of which had never been translated into Japanese until now. Her other forms include photography and essays.
